Animal shelters provide homes for orphaned and stray animals by rescuing them. Blue Cross, PETA and CUPA are some of the agencies that provide homes for such homeless animals.
Sometimes these organizations also handle cremation of animals which die due to old age or as a result of being run over by vehicles on highways.
Rescued animals are assigned to People for Animals Hospital and Rescue Centre, Avian and Reptile Rehabilitation Centre or Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centres. After recovery, these animals are generally released to their natural habitat, but where the animals are too weak or die in spite of the treatment given, their carcasses need to be cremated.
Sometimes, during construction activities which have resumed after the lockdowns, JCBs and other earth movers cause injuries to snakes while these machines dig through soil. Peacocks are chased by dogs and get killed. The spinal cord of reptiles can be badly injured causing death.
Animals also age fast. For example, the life span of domestic animals can be given as follows:
- Small dogs: 13 years
- Large dogs: 8 years
- Cats: 12-18 years
- Goldfish: 5-10 years
- Parakeet: 5-8 years
- Hamster: 2-3 years
- Guinea pig: 4-8 years
- Rabbit: 7-10
One can understand from the above list that even though these shelters provide them with nourishment and comfort, the animals themselves have short life span and once they breathe their last, the carcasses have to be disposed of. While the owners of pet animals may choose to bury the dead, the shelters prefer a safer and better option, i.e. incineration. The reason for these can be found from the limited space available and avoiding infection to other animals.
Haat model GD, PD, ADR and ACR are particularly selected for these applications considering;
- efficiency
- economy of operation
- skid mounted
- design requiring no special installation work
- easy to operate
require no technically qualified person
