SWR MARINE / SHIPBOARD INCINERATOR
The introduction of the SWR model incinerator to Haat`s range of products has not only fulfilled the need for a product of this type, but has also served as an answer to the call given by the Government of India to `Make in India` with regard to incinerators. Such a Marine Incinerator system has not been available indigenously. This has bridged the gap for an Indian incinerator for use by cruise ships, Navy and coast guards, cargo vessels, tanks, offshore platforms, shore based disposal facilities as well as furnace oil fired power plants. The applications exist not only within India but everywhere in the world. The SWR model Marine Incinerator is probably the only Indian incinerator to be type approved and certified for MED B + D by DNV-GL Norway. It conforms to the requirements of IMO and has a wide range from 200 to 2400 kW.
This incinerator was designed and made primarily for use on board ships of various types. Until now the shipping industry as well as the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have been buying these incinerators from abroad. This is now available indigenously and the initiative to make this was in line with the Indian Government`s “Make in India” policy.
The International Maritime Organization`s Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) have formulated certain regulations for the prevention of pollution to the seas by garbage and sludge oil from ships. Ship`s wastes cannot be consigned to the seas as these can damage the marine life and environment. Incinerators are recommended as a means of disposal of these wastes and such incinerators have to comply with IMO`s MEPC.244(66) - standard specification for shipboard incinerator. The European Community`s Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 96/98/EC seeks to harmonise the uniform implementation of IMP standards and procedures for approval of marine equipment. Annexure A-1/2-7 of the MED covers MED type approval of ship board incinerators. Incinerators have to be type approved by an internationally recognized notifying body and they should comply with IMO’s MEPC.244 (66) – standard specifications for ship board incinerators.
The SWR Marine incinerator is a triple chamber jacketed design, where solid waste and liquid waste are incinerated together. The flue gas is treated in the secondary and tertiary chambers where enough turbulence is created to burn out all the particulates. The exiting flue gas is cooled in the ejector system, which also creates negative pressure in the chambers to prevent leakage of flue gas.
The system is provided with a sludge pump, burners and all the instruments required. An ID fan, waste oil tank and a diesel tank along with control panel are conveniently mounted on skids. The fan provides combustion air to the chambers, suction air to the ejector and cooling air to the body. The incinerator is of a jacketed design to ensure low skin temperature.
The SWR model marine incinerator`s design and construction are unique in more ways than one:
1. It is MED B=D certified and IMO type approved.
2. It is designed to fit into ship`s limited space.
3. It is designed to have very low skin temperature.
4. It is skid-mounted with all assemblies in place.
5. It is shop refractory-cured.
6. It is fully automatic.
7. It can handle both solid and liquid wastes together.
8. It is shop-assembled and ready to fire, once waste is loaded and connected to power.
9. It is very economical in running costs.
Main features:
1. The IMO certification entailed extensive trials lasting almost 3 years, during which the incinerator had to be operated continuously over a period of time. During this trial, many performance parameters had to be proved in front of the inspecting agency. During the trials it has proved beyond doubt that the system meets all the IMO requirements.
2. The design takes into account the space restrictions on board ships and hence there is no need to find large space which is unavailable.
3. The main body is of a jacketed design. A fan, which is mounted on top of the incinerator, provides cooling air to the body, combustion air to the chamber and also required air for the ejector mechanism and to cool the outgoing flue gas, whose temperature can be as low as 200 to 300°C as compared to the chamber temperature of more than 1000°C.
4. The machine, which is skid mounted, has all its sub-assemblies alongside. These include the retort type incinerator with its 3 chambers, diesel oil tank and sludge oil tank with pump, heater and continuous mixing arrangement, control panel, fan, motors, instruments, cabling and piping. Its variable speed sludge dosing with in-built protection prevents damage to it.
5. The refractory lining is fully shop-cured, which means the moisture content is removed methodically without any damage to the lining. It does not require any further treatment at client`s end. The incinerator is made ready to meet thermal shocks at user`s end, without any problem.
6. The control philosophy and safety interlocks ensure no excess chamber or skin temperature, operator safety and equipment safety.
7. The incinerator will handle solid, liquid and semi-solid sludge wastes, all together. It is provided with an air-locked double door (for operator safety) for solid waste and a fully automatic
8. Being fully automatic, it does not require any other human activity, which makes it user-friendly and trouble-free.
9. No further installation work or trial is required at client`s end, since everything has been done at Haat`s shops prior to shipment.
10. It is very economical and self-sustaining. Because the waste oil has a high calorific value, the external fuel used is bare minimum. Hence the running cost is exceptionally low. Additionally the maintenance costs are also minimal, with the special refractory providing trouble-free long life.
Other features:
1. Efficient & environment friendly - 99% destruction and removal efficiency of organic content with clean emissions
2. Saves marine life
3. Instantaneous disposal on board
4. Saves space and labour
5. Saves money as port disposal can be expensive
6. Safe loading of solid waste
7. Negative pressure within the chamber at all times
8. Big range from 200 to 2400 kW
Design features:
1. Compact triple chamber design to fit in standard shipping containers
2. Simultaneous burning of solid and liquid wastes
3. Recirculation pump with self-cleaning filter for sludge tank
4. Variable speed sludge dosing
5. PLC control with colour HMI
6. Special surface preparation and marine grade painting
7. Special refractory for long life
8. Fully automatic operation
9. High temperature inside and low skin temperature
Standard equipment:
1. Incinerator with primary, secondary and tertiary chambers
2. Diesel burners
3. Waste oil tank
4. Diesel tank
5. ID fan
6. PLC control panel with HMI screen
7. Loading – manual or automatic.

Advantages:
1. A control panel is invariably provided with an HMI touch colour screen. Human machine intervention occurs only a couple of times; while loading the sludge or solid waste and while starting the system by operating the touch screen and while stopping it. In other words, it is FULLY AUTOMATIC, requiring no intervention whatsoever. It does not also need any installation or assembly at the end user`s place because it is fully shop-assembled and tested.
2. The special refractory used to line the inside of the incinerator has an exceptional strength at high temperature and provides a long life to the equipment.
3. The special surface preparation and marine grade paint used ensure good finish and long paint life.
4. Negative pressure in the chamber at all times, ensuring no smoke leakage.
5. Emergency stop button in two locations.
6. Almost fully shop-assembled requiring very little work at the ship
7. Every incinerator undergoes complete shop test before despatch.
8. Containerised options.
9. Wide range from 200 KW to 2400 KW (higher models on request)
Other benefits include:
1. The SWR Marine Incinerator is efficient and environment friendly with 99.99% destruction and removal efficiency of the organic content in the waste with clean emissions.
2. It saves marine life from destruction by preventing pollution of the seas by indiscriminate disposal of waste oil and garbage into it.
3. It offers instantaneous disposal option to a ship, which does not have to wait until it reaches a port with incineration facilities, by carrying all the waste on board. It saves money because port disposal facilities are generally expensive.
