Zoological parks all over the world face the problem of disposal of dead animals and India is no exception. We were contacted by Mumbai Zoo to discuss this problem. We visited the site and identified the type/s of animals which are generally prone to death due to old age and in some cases illness. A zebra or an antelope or a deer / buffalo were in general the animals to die in the park.
Based on our own previous experience handling different animals and birds, we proposed an incinerator which would not only cater to burning the solid meat but also the fat. This in particular is important as otherwise it would result in leakage of the fat outside the machine and improper burn out.
The weight of the animal considered was 350 kg with a burn rate of 250 kg/h. A hoist was proposed to lift the animal and place it into the incinerator’s combustion chamber. A post-combustion chamber and air pollution control devices with a 30 metre stack were also proposed.
The end-user approved the entire incineration system after a factory acceptance test and it was installed successfully.
The Haat Animal Cremator / Large Animal Incinerator for the Mumbai Zoo has many firsts to its credit:
• It is provided with a dual hearth
• It can handle both solid carcass and liquid fat
• Its charging door is automatic - electrically operated
• It has a weight acceptance of 350 kg at one time
• It is provided with a jib crane to lift and load the animal carcass into the combustion chamber
• It is fully automatic with PLC and HMI operation
• It fully complies with statutory requirements of emission
• It is lined both with castable refractory as well as refractory bricks
• It is completely designed by Haat in-house.
• It is designed for a working life of at least 20 years.
The Animal
This is an incineration system both Haat and the client are happy to have because no dead animal from the zoo is sent out but disposed of properly, effectively and economically within the zoo itself.
