SABIC - Hazardous Waste Incinerator

SABIC, the government owned Saudi Arabian Company, a big name both in Saudi and outside, shortlisted Haat on the recommendations of their Indian consultant and Cushman & Wakefield for supply of incinerator for their new R & D Centre in Bangalore.

The main requirement and reason for shortlisting us was the fact that in addition to meeting the CPCB Guidelines for Hazardous Waste Incinerators, they also wanted the emissions to conform to Euro norms. They also wanted a quality product, much in line with a European or American source, as Saudi Arabia normally prefers supplies from these parts and not from Asia.

A visit by the representatives of SABIC, their consultants Cushman & Wakefield and their main contractor Shapoorji Palloonji to our plant for evaluating our Common Hazardous Waste Incinerator and infrastructure convinced the team to decide to award the contract in our favour.

The waste was hazardous aqueous waste, organic solvent, waste oil and solid waste generated by the R & D centre. The majority of the waste was aqueous. The system has to meet very low particulate emissions.

Our Swiss partners, CTU, were involved in the discussion through video conference (they made a visit subsequently to SABIC), basic engineering to prepare the PFD and mass balance documents.

The system configuration was

• Primary combustion

chamber

• Secondary combustion chamber

• Ram loader

• Liquid waste feeding system

• FD fan

• Gas Cooler

• Bag filter

• Acid gas scrubber

• Mist eliminator

• Caustic dosing

• ID fan

• 30 m stack

• PLC control panel with HMI

• CEMS

Additionally insulation was given for all the equipment where the skin temperature was is in excess of 50°C.

The contract involved not only manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of the plant, but also operation & maintenance for a period of 3 years. Haat had no hesitation in taking up even the O & M part of the contract, because of their previous project experiences in Tata Motors, Jamshedpur and Tata Hitachi, Dharwad.

The plant was made and assembled at our factory and after inspection by client and his inspection team, sent to the site where installation took about a month.

Once commissioning was completed in the next 2 weeks, Haat took up the O & M using their own staff.

The O & M continued for a couple of years more, after the initial 3 year period.

The client was quite happy with the product quality, emissions achieved and trouble-free operation of the incinerator system.
