Marine Incinerators
As has been reported earlier in some of our earlier blogs, Haat has designed, developed and
produced marine incinerators for use on board ships. These incinerators are of a special design where atmospheric air cools the inner surface of the machine, so that the outer body is kept to no more than 20°C above the ambient and to avoid any injury that may be caused to any one due to high skin temperature. This is especially important, given the limited confines of a ship.
Ships cannot afford to throw their wastes into the sea as this would endanger marine life. These wastes are to be incinerated in the incinerators provided within the ship. These Marine Incinerators are designed as per MARPOL regulations and are certified to meet the specifications and emissions given in MEPC.244(66) – Standards for Shipboard Incinerator.
Haat has made and exported these machines to many countries. In India, a pre-requisite for supply is to be certified by certain quality assurance agencies (independent of ISO 9001). This involves some diligent auditing of our infrastructure and other capabilities which can take several days. Haat was successful in obtaining a Grade 1 certification and this coupled with our existing MED B certificate for the marine incinerator issued by DNV Norway paved the way for many orders from Indian shipyards.
Testing of these incinerators includes simulating ship like conditions such as the functioning of the machine during the ship rolling and pitching; continuous operation of the machine in auto mode over a period of many hours without stoppage, etc. Emissions were checked constantly and recorded.
To be able to supply an incinerator to a ship, it requires understanding of the ship’s structure, location of the incinerators, space available, elbow room, heat radiation calculations, etc. before the drawing is frozen.
It took Haat many years to design, develop and finally get type approval and specific QA registration. It was however, worth the time and effort, because we are now able to offer these certified, Made in India marine incinerators for use on board ships. The quality and performance of the Marine Incinerator that we produce is second to none in the world.
It has helped Indian shipyards reduce their reliance on having to import these from outside the country and helps them to procure incinerators that are much more economical, have a shorter delivery and backed up by instant local service and of course, the Haat brand!
