Assured Safety at an Incinerator Manufacturing Plant

How do we make working in an incinerator manufacturing place safe and secure? Placing notice boards and placards asking employees to take care while working is not enough.  People get used to these notices and stop noticing them after a while.

What is required is planned and periodic maintenance of production equipment and regular meetings with production personnel to find out if there are any issues concerning safety of the equipment and people.

No doubt, the Management Representative of our ISO team and Sr. Quality Control Engineer brings out issues concerning Occupational Health and Safety Management System at every Management Review Meeting and finds resolutions for such issues. Provision of missing guards for rotating machines, PPE for employees, controlling noise level at work place, silencers for fans, fixing loose electrical connections, etc. are some of the measures taken based on such reviews.

Again, the above activities by themselves will not be enough. How do we provide secondary and tertiary measures to ensure safety of operators and the equipment being used?

There are chartered engineers approved as `competent authorities` by the Director of Factories and Boilers to perform certain  safety audits and issue Certificates of Test Reports of Equipment, which are valid for one year.  They visit the factory and carry out inspection and testing of pressure vessels, EOT cranes, lifting tackles, body harness, material handling equipment like forklift, pallet trucks, grit blasting and dust extraction equipment, air compressors, etc.  The inspection carried out:

- is visual for fitness

- includes operation of the equipment for any misalignment or noise

- checks pressure vessel thickness

- includes hydraulic test of air receivers

- checks the condition of lifting tackle, body harnesses and blasting suits

The certificates are attached to the equipment tested and provide a sense of security and assurance to the operator that the machine he is working on is safe to work with.

These measures make working in Haat while manufacturing incinerators a safe place, which is evidenced by the high number of incident/accident free days.

Not only do we make sure that the Haat incinerators we make are safe to use by the clients, we ensure complete safety while making them!
