Training - The Key to Incinerator Manufacture and Operation
The importance of training in any activity cannot be over-emphasized. In particular, when we talk about incinerators, this becomes more relevant in the context of;
a) Making a machine perform well over a reasonable period of time.
b) Safety being a major concern, in view of the temperatures inside the chamber in the region of 800 to 1100°
c) Environmental issues which need understanding and application.
While manufacturing an incinerator, the following areas need to be looked into.
1. House keeping
2. Safe working conditions
3. Use of PPE
4. Care in handling electrical connections and equipment
5. Using right tools for the right jobs
Disorderly storage of raw materials and equipment could lead to serious accidents. Using paints and chemicals without proper protective gear could cause health issues. All electrical lines and equipment should be connected safely and securely without any room for accidents or incidents. People should use the right kind of tools and equipment for the jobs for which they are intended.
With regard to operation of an incinerator, the operator needs to know
1. The do’s and don’ts
2. Ensure negative pressure in the combustion chamber to prevent positive pressure build up and or leakage of smoke, fire, injury, etc.
3. To de-ash at appropriate frequency
4. To load waste as per recommended frequency and quantity.
5. To ensure APC systems are in good shape and to maintain them periodically
6. To keep various components and equipment in ship-shape condition at all times.
Environmental issues
The operator should know that his act of getting rid of the waste by incineration should not lead to another issue of environmental damage. For this purpose he has to:
1. Make sure emissions are always kept under limits
2. Ensure no discharge of scrubber bleed through drains
3. Ensure that all the APCs are designed to meet local pollution control / regulatory norms
4. CEMS connected to regulatory authority portal is always functional
5. Set an example of how to run the incinerator without causing any problems to others
These aspects of manufacturing and operating an incinerator system require a customized training programme which has to be repeated at least 3 times in a year. The training should be conducted by qualified and experienced persons in the field who should be able to interact and convince the trainees to ensure implementation. Those who supervise the operators and production teams should ensure the training is really given effect to by assessing the understanding of the trainees.
This kind of training is offered both in-house for our own staff as well as our clients, wherever they are located.
