How to Get a Long Life from Your Incinerator

An incinerator is made keeping in mind its expected quality, customer requirements, atmospheric conditions, performance parameters and emissions. It is also made using good quality steel, refractory, etc. so that the life expectancy of the machine is at least 15 to 20 years. Preparation and painting is chosen such that it requires repainting only after 3 to 5 years.

All the above objectives can be achieved comfortably, provided:

a)      the user maintains the incinerator following the daily, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance plans as per the O & M manual provided with the machine.

b)      the machine is allowed to cool slowly (not suddenly) by opening the charging and de-ashing doors and letting the ID or FD fan run for at least 3 to 4 hours after the close of operation for the day - if it works for a single shift operation. If not, shutdown days must be scheduled for maintenance.

c)      ash collected in the primary and secondary chambers is removed at least once a day to prevent clinker formation and choking.

d)      condition of the refractory is checked at least once a fortnight for deep and wide cracks (hairline cracks are ok) and if found, to be attended to on priority.

e)      the nozzles in the scrubber and mist eliminator are checked once a month for choking.

f)       mist eliminator packing is checked at least once  a fortnight to prevent clogging of the packing and the resultant choking.

g)      emission values are monitored continuously if possible; if not at least once a month.

h)      scrubber water condition is monitored weekly and the bleed replaced with fresh water.

i)       the operator removes the burner quickly in the event of a total power failure.

j)       the burners are serviced once a week.

k)      the fans speed, vibration, etc. are checked once a month.

l)       accumulation of particulate matter if any, is checked and cleared from the ID fan.

m)    hydraulic oil  in power pack is topped up (for ram loader).

n)      the panel board is cleaned with air from a blower to remove dust collection.

o)     the condition of the electro magnet in the emergency stack.

Please remember the incinerator system will function as efficiently as when you started using it, after many years, provided the user takes care of these maintenance tips. Many of our users do take pride in maintaining the system well and that is how they get the MAXIMUM LIFE out of it.
