A Century of Blogs from Haat Incinerators

Even though the immensely popular IPL 2019 cricket tournament is done and dusted, there is still more cricket to come with the World Cup looming large among the cricket playing nations of the world.

And with this blog, Haat will also be completing a century of blogs!  We celebrated last week our 20th anniversary in protecting the environment.

In this 100th blog, we would like to give you 100 reasons why incineration is necessary, important facts about incinerators as well as key factors regarding incinerator manufacture and supply -

1)                With a burgeoning world population, the volume of waste generated is only increasing day by day. Incineration is the only process that reduces waste volume by 95 to 96%.

2)                Incineration has also been able to reduce the quantity of waste being sent to landfills.

3)                The cleaned/scrubbed flue gases from gaseous contaminants including particulates are released safely to the environment.

4)                Waste can be disposed of as it is accumulated, enabling the work place to be kept safe and tidy.

5)                With energy costs rising, the heat generated by incineration can be utilized usefully to generating electricity like is being done in Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, Germany, USA and Canada, to name a few countries.

6)                Incineration has other benefits like destroying contaminated medical waste and other life risking garbage.

7)                Where the availability of land is a problem, like in Japan, incineration is the right solution.

8)                Heat from incineration can also be used in cold climates to keep homes and work places warm.

9)                Experience shows that landfills release more greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxides, dioxin, hydrocarbon and volatile organic compounds.

10)             Landfills also leach poisonous contaminants into the water table, thus contaminating the ground water.

11)             Incineration requires less land space than landfill.

12)             The main contention was that incineration releases hazardous compounds, particularly dioxin. Modern incineration plants release emissions well within the standards laid down by regulatory authorities.

13)             Thermal processing reduces hazards from waste.

14)             Incineration saves considerable costs in transporting waste.

15)             While landfills allow waste to decay thereby releasing unpleasant odour, incineration plants produce no smell because waste gets burnt.

16)             Production of methane in landfills may also lead to explosions causing noise pollution and leading to global warming, which does not happen in the case of incinerators.

17)             Since incineration plants operate at very high temperatures, germs and organics are fully destroyed.

18)             Incineration can be done in any season including the monsoon, whereas in the case of landfills, it cannot accept the wastes in the rainy season.

19)             It is a very effective way of recycling metals.

20)             Incinerators have an on-line monitoring system.

47)             Haat practices what it preaches, by running a Common Hazwaste Incineration facility at its premises.

48)             UNDP, USAID, SOS, Missionary hospitals etc. are some of the regular users of Haat incinerators.

49)             When an incineration plant is designed and operated properly, like Haat`s systems, that is the primary reason to install one where the waste is piling up. It does not matter, what the waste is, Haat will handle it.

50)             Animal carcasses can be safely disposed of without the fear of disease.

51)             In-house disposal without transporting waste long distances.

52)             Destruction in a safe manner actually leads to higher productivity.

54)             Incineration prevents the spread of disease in areas affected by epidemics.

55)             Environmental impact from man’s operations in remote areas can be effectively controlled by incineration.

56)             Incinerators can be built to comply with any emission regulation.

57)             Incineration may not be the one-stop solution for all wastes, but it is one of the most important ones.

58)             Municipal solid waste rejects after recyclable materials are removed can be easily destroyed by incineration.

59)             Blaming incinerators for causing more air pollution is foolish, vehicles on the road and natural events like volcano eruptions cause far higher environmental impacts.

60)             Key considerations in incinerator component and material design are critical to their long life.

61)             Incinerators should be designed and constructed in such a way that they are energy efficient.

62)             Misuse of production rejects in secondary markets is best prevented by their onsite incineration.

64)             Waste heat can be recovered in an incinerator to obtain hot water, steam or even power.

65)             Not only can incinerators use bag filters, they can even be fitted with HEPA filters to reduce dust emissions to less than 1 mg/Nm3.

66)             Welding, refractory and painting procedure qualification is a must for manufacturing of a quality incinerator.

67)             The quality of documentation accompanying a supply is as important as the quality of the incinerator itself.

68)             Incinerator companies and their designs can only be ratified by their experience, references and feedback from users of their products.

69)             Where the incinerator is made and what equipment was used to make it is as important as the end product.

70)             Incinerator scrubbers can polish and remove almost any pollutant from flue gas to negligible values.

71)             Training of the incinerator operator is critical to ensure long and effective life of the system.
